VIDEO: Pittsburgh’s classic Dirty Dozen Race to become a Global Ride Training Video

Posted Feb 03, 2010 by erok under spare parts

Global Ride’s Dirty Dozen Trailer.  This is worth watching just for the incredible shots of Pittsburgh and our hills, rivers, tunnels, and vistas

Want to see what Pittsburgh’s all about? Check out this video.

The first Saturday after Thanksgiving, it’s now become a classic Pittsburgh tradition to ride Danny Chew’s Dirty Dozen, a points based race that goes up Pittsburgh’s 13 steepest streets, some of which are the steepest on earth. Chew, the million mile man, started the annual race over twenty years ago, and it’s grown to hundreds of riders.  It’s renowned for the dreaded Canton Ave, arguably the steepest street in the world.  You can watch riders tip over and crash on this brick hill at about 6:30.  At about 6:45 in the video, you can experience riding through the Liberty Tunnel, just about the only safe time to ride through it.

The video starts out with some great still shots, then breaks into some footage that helps you experience what it’s like to ride up these hills from the comfort of your computer screen.  Global Ride plans on turning this footage into a 90 minute virtual training video, so that cyclists can pop it into their DVD player and ride around Pittsburgh from anywhere in the world.  All proceeds from the video will go to Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong campaign.

Are you a Pittsburgh musician that wants to be in the video?

Global Ride is looking for Pittsburgh artists to showcase their work in the program.  Pittsburgh’s own Cello Fury provided the epic music for the opening sequence in the trailer.  Simply go to the Global Ride website and contact them.

Be sure to watch the rider’s faces during the opening still shots and look for Pittsburgh’s cycling luminaries.
