I thought this was a pretty odd video. has Mercedes Benz decided bike hipsters are viable potential customers?

To me, it acknowledges that not all people on bikes are, low income, anti-car, non-drivers.

Analysis aside, it's a cool little video.

I was driving south on West Liberty Avenue at about 8:00 on Friday evening when I came across a cyclist, also heading south. He deserves a shout out for the effort he took to be visible. Coming up from behind him I first noticed a 12" x 1" (best guess) reflective strip on each ankle/lower calf. Perhaps a strip around the zippers on his riding tights? Then I noticed at least 3 red blinkies -- the big multi-lamp ones. I think he had one on his bike, one on his backpack, and one on his helmet. In front he had a big nicad looking lamp. Frankly, a flashing light on the front would be a good add. But, he was CLEARLY looking to be seen, and has found a good way to accomplish that. I saw him from a block away, even though I would have thought West Liberty Avenue was somewhat bicycle unfriendly and was NOT expecting to see anyone riding there at that time of day.

This is my first post with html code and images, so I'm sorry if this is a mess…

Since everyone has been thanking each other and mentioning random goodwill among the biking community, I've decided to add my testimonial to cyclists in the area.

When Robposted about his CAD-driven plasma cutter, I took him up on the offer to cut any metal parts needed.

I had been wanting to create some kind of wrist support for my long distance bike trips. I get numbness in my left wrist from leaning on the handlebars and I was looking for a way to displace the pressure points. He cut 2 pieces of aluminum for me. I fit the metal pieces into a pre-made velcro-and-neoprene wrist brace. The brace was was originally made for snow boarders - I had purchased it at Willi's.

Anyhow, Rob didn't know me, but he advised on the best material and size as well as cut 2 different thicknesses of the part for me. Thanks, Rob. So far it feels great, even though it's only on trainer rides! I'm using the 1/16" thickness.

And thanks too, to the entire cycling community for being equally helpful to each other. All of the shoveling' going on, the good directions when I'm lost, and the camaraderie on local rides are much appreciated.

Pix of the wrist brace with exposed cut aluminum and wrist brace assembled.

Of course the track wheel I've had sitting around is too big for the nice track frame I just built up. I like my wheel, but I need $$ for a new one.

Hub is unmarked, but it's aluminum, high-flange, flip fixed/free, 36 hole, laced with DT Swiss spokes to an Ambrosio 19 Extra Elite aluminum rim. This IS a 27" wheel, not a 700c (eight freaking mm bigger), so if your bike has tight dimensions like mine, it may rub. Fits anything with a bit more clearance!

Wheel is unridden by me, probably unridden by the builder. True, no play in bearings. Free 3/32" cog, also maybe a lockring :) $75 is what I paid for it, but yeah, OBO! email me at m4ngm4ng at gmail dot com. thx guys

So... I am really struggling right now. Back in November, I was in a pretty rough bike accident in which I broke my leg quite badly when a pickup smashed into the left side of my body on my way home from work. The accident landed me in the hospital for a week and on the couch for far longer. I thank God that nothing worse happened, and I've stunned the masses with a remarkably quick recovery. I am now ready to ride again, but my family is insistent that I never mount a bike on city turf again. Biking was my main mode of transportation, and I actually hid my cycling passion from my family for years knowing they'd worry themselves silly. Figuring they'd notice my cast and crutches at Thanksgiving, I had to let them in on my secret. It's kind of crazy because I'm 26 and while that is clearly old enough to continue making my own decisions regarding lifestyle, I am still torn over what to do with this desire to resume riding again, having had my loving family care for me throughout the pain of everything. I've been challenged to both get back "in the saddle", yet have been challenged by others to sacrifice my love of biking to bring peace of mind to my family (and by family, I mainly mean my mom, dad, and older sister). I decided to wait and make this decision once I became well enough to ride again, and here I now stand on both legs, seemingly peddle ready. I am wondering if anyone has been in a similar scenario with their family urging them to not ride. It's a delicate subject for my family, whom I love more than biking (and man do I love biking), but whose worry makes me crazy. I don't know how to reason this aloud or in my own mind. I appreciate your advice and suggestions, and most of all insight if you've had a similar experience weighing it all with folks you love in mind.

On my little lunch bike ride in the strip this afternoon I was casually riding back to my office via Railroad St when I slowed to let a truck pass and avoid a huge pot hole. I was in no hurry.

The truck, a contractor's large F-150, stopped and waved me down. I figured he just wanted to ask me directions so I pulled up and stopped. He starts asking me about my bike (a Kona paddywagon) and why the wheelbase looked so short. I was a little shocked but we had a nice little chat about the bike and why I would ride it. The two in the truck worked on and rode bikes a lot when they were younger and I guess they were just bored.

Just thought I would share.

I dedicate this thread to documenting those pothole locations that are the "best" of the worst, worthy of attention (and warning) for all. Who knows, perhaps we can work up an Annual Pothole Tour in March?

I'll start:

Do NOT blast down 45th street without really paying attention, there are some real doozies there!

Penn Avenue from about Aiken to Penn Circle West is like whoa. I will try to photograph the potholes located at the intersection of Penn n Penn Circle West that are actually kind of surprising in their number and size.

Hey all~

I was wondering if anyone in the Pittsburgh cycling community was doing a Bike Commuting intro class?

It seems we have a bunch of great reading material/literature on the subject (the new booklet) and we have organized rides (Car Free Fridays). I was thinking we might need something in between for folks who want to start commuting but would like a classroom/parking lot type atmosphere to practice hand signals, riding while looking over the shoulder, scenario role play, etc, before hitting the street.

Just wondering if anyone was offering such a thing, and if not, do you think this might be a good idea? Any existing models elsewhere?

There are two Independent Fabrication bikes on CL that seem a bit fishy....

Single speed, $700, with a, ahem, 12" seatpost.

Planet Cross, $700.

If you legitimately own these bikes and are trying to sell them, listing out the components would go a long way toward quelling fears about purchasing a stolen bike. Or, perhaps, you find hundred dollar bills in your couch cushions and can afford to take a MASSIVE loss on your purchases (new Planet Cross frames are $2000+).

For those who may be interested in going a little farther afield, a link to this cycling calendar. A years worth of rides and events, many of which are within striking distance. Just try to disregard the Lycroids on the cover.
Ohio is ridiculous with biking events for such an otherwise unremarkable state (imho, having grown up there).

Well yesterday as I was riding on grandview ave in mt washington a guy threw his car door open as I was passing his car and almost hit me with it. I told him to watch out then he yelled at me and told me it was my fault. He said he opened the door and I almost hit him, when in reality he opened it blindly.

I was riding in the road where I should of been. I took the lane closer to the right so the car behind me could pass safely also.

My question is who was right and who was wrong? If he already had it opened like he says then I must be blind because I didn't see it in till I was a few inches from it.

I also must add that I rode about 20 miles all around yesterday and later in the day while cruising down east carson there was a parked car that i was passing. The people in the car where about to open the door but as they cracked them open they looked behind them self and seen us riding up. AT that point they held the door closed and let us pass safely. We thanked them as we passed and went on our way. At least some people are still courteous.

I bought a bike from a guy who said he built it, but the paint job is just too bad for me to not think he was trying to cover up identifying features.
If someone had a Schwinn conversion stolen lately tell me some information about it: size, original color, or anything quirky you can think of.
If it's yours we'll get in touch, and I'll visit the guy I bought it from and try and get my money back.
I'll probably only check this for a couple weeks, so if you think you know someone who's bike this might be reply to this message asap.
Otherwise I'll content myself that the guy is just a terrible painter.

I hate riding 2nd Avenue! I find it a bit scary and very stressful. Any suggestions as to the best way to find out what parts of these two trails (major commute routes for many of us) are ridable or not? Can we keep a topic going on the board specifically for these?
I will not be on them until Monday, so hopefully they will be clear by then.
Going up Greenfield during rush hour is just hard, which is ok- just another workout.
