HELP!
-
So today i dragged my bike down 3 flights of stairs for my first ride to work from my new apartment. I got on it and went to pedal across the street and to my great dismay it would not go. My poor beloved bike is broken and I don't know how to fix it! It won't pedal forwards at all. The chain is attached but it is stuck behind that metal circular gear cover (i'm so good with the names of bike parts clearly) and won't budge. I tried to fiddle with it but no go. Has this happened to anyone else? I supposed I'm going to try to walk it to free ride on tuesday if I can't figure it out. I'm just worried and totally bummed out about it being broken so any help would be very appreciated. Thanks!

Circular gear cover? Do you mean a chainguard of some sort? Often, just yanking the chain around can help with that. It's also worth poking around on Sheldon Brown's site, as well as that of Park Tool for bike repair advice.

If I remember right from a previous post of yours, you're at Penn & Main. That's pretty close to me, and it would be pretty easy for me to have a look at your bike over the weekend. I'll have some time Saturday around noon and on Sunday. Shoot me an email with a phone number if you still need some help: blacklimestone at gmail

walk it to kraynicks and ask anyone in the back to help you (or kraynick)... its much closer and you'll definately have all the parts you need if you need to replace something (which i doubt you do) or you could just let these dashing young men fight over serving you

man i am so mad that i didn't see all these dashing young men's posts over the weekend! (no internet at my place yet) after i carried it back up the three flights of stairs and jiggled some things around a tad it started working again, or at least it seems that it did, i haven't gotten to take it out on the road yet. if i have more problems i will most certainly depending on the kindness of strangers. thanks again everyone!

Definitely find time to stop by Kraynicks on Penn Avenue sometime soon. He's the od-fashioned sort of bike repair guy (and does awesome volunteer work as well). He's probably within a few blocks of you, on the north side of the street. Glad to hear you got it sorted out yourself.
