So, my wife and I (new to PGH in November) have been commuting by bike (although perhaps not when it's as cold as it's been lately), going between Squirrel Hill (home), Oakland and Shadyside.

We've Found good routes for those basics, but now my wife needs to get up from Oakland to a meeting at Children's Hospital. Any suggestions for good routes to cover that trip and then home to Squirrel Hill?

Thanks for the feedback - bike-pgh has been an invaluable resource....

Millvale is the key to the route. Coming from the hospitals, take:
Bayard->Devonshire->Millvale (via the parking lot there or a hop along Centre)->Friendship or Liberty and Main

To go to Squill, I'd reverse up to Devonshire, then hop over to Morewood at some point, go through CMU to Frew or Tech Street then climb along Schenley Dr.

Thanks, Alankhg. That sounds pretty much like what i would have considered based only on looking at the map, but it's good to hear confirmation from someone who knows...

This would be a great opportunity to check out the Liberty Avenue bike lanes!

When I lived in Bloomfield, my route would have been something like: Main to Liberty, stay straight on Aiken, right on Fifth, left on Wilkins (hard turn), then right on Wightman.

To my mind, going back through CMU and the Park is truly backtracking. I need to check a map to see if it really is.

Also, in case you didnt know, for days like today
UPMC runs a shuttle between childrens and oakland. Its free if you have a upmc badge thing.

Swalfoort- depends on where in Squirrel Hill you're heading. It's a pretty huge neighborhood.

Thanks all. Wife decided on the shuttle bus (she's got the badge thing), but this is good information for the future. Definitely worth checking out the Liberty bike lanes.

For what it's worth, we're in central squirrel hill just a couple of blocks off of beechwood at the park. I personally go to shadyside and have been going shady->walnut->aiken->centre, but I might consider morewood ->cmu->schenley. Don't know if it's backtracking or not, but it might be nice for a change of scenery...
