NY Times: The Business of Biking

Officials in Portland, Ore., are encouraging small businesses catering to cyclists.

“Our intentions are to be as sustainable a city as possible,” Mr. Adams said. “That means socially, that means environmentally and that means economically. The bike is great on all three of those factors. You just can't get a better transportation return on your investment than you get with promoting bicycling.”

Portland is such a great city and this only one of the many reasons.

It’s hard, after spending some real time there, to come back and get used to cycling in Pgh. But in some ways it’s more exhilarating to be part of a young, growing bike movement than just another Californian who’s come to take advantage of what other people worked for.
