Post-Gazette Letter to the Editor: Bicyclists, illuminate yourselves

Posted Sep 09, 2008 by scott under spare parts

I agree, cyclists need to do a better job at staying visible on our streets. It’s the least we can do to follow the law and have a front headlight and rear reflector. However, it’s unrealistic to require cyclists to wear any other particular clothing items. Sure, a jacket with reflectors is better than a jacket with no reflectors, but where do you draw the line over what garments are required? Cyclists: do your part and stay legal. That means front headlight and AT LEAST a rear reflector. We recommend rear blinkie lights (red) and reflectors. Motorists: Always watch out for cyclists, especially now that it’s getting darker earlier. Slow down, and eliminate distractions such as talking on your cell phones!
