Post-Gazette: Bridge over Mon fills bike trail’s missing link

During one of their initial bicycle rides on the C&O Canal Towpath in Washington, D.C., in the early 1980s, John Surma and his wife, Becky, asked a fellow cyclist how far the trail went.
The man said it went at least as far as Great Falls, Va., and added:
“Some day, they say it’s going to go all the way to Pittsburgh.” Read more»

The Alleghengy Trail Alliance web site says:
Riverton Bridge – The Riverton Bridge is under construction and should be ready for the October 4 ride. It is not open now (9/26/08) or accessible for trail use until all the fencing and railing has been installed. Please do not come to this very active construction site until after the 4th. On the 4th there will be temporary access through another construction site, in Duquesne, where a new flyover ramp is being constructed to connect Rt 837 to the industrial park. Until that county project is complete (2009 sometime) there should be no trespassing through that site! We can enjoy McKeesport and the Riverton Bridge, after the 4th, but there is no trail for public use past the Duquesne side of the bridge. Hope you all celebrate these great successes with us, in this most difficult part of the trail, and stay tuned for updates. If fund-raising goes well, we could be completed by next summer. Wish us luck, and please respect our pleas to stay away from the active construction areas.
