Post-Gazette: Firm picked to map new Allegheny Valley Trail
I didn’t want this to get lost in the daily headlines, so it’s getting it’s own post like all bike specific articles will. This is an extremely important connection, because cyclists are currently using the bumpy “goat path” next to the train tracks. There have also been reports of cyclists getting harassed for riding this corridor, yet people can easily park down here to go fishing. There is an obvious need and user group, so let’s make this happen and give Pittsburgh one of the most extensive trail networks in the country. Western Pennsylvania is beautiful, let’s all enjoy it.

Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato this morning announced that McTish Kunkel & Associates will complete the development plan for a 32-mile trail along the Allegheny River between Millvale and Harrison.
The firm will begin the mapping process for the proposed Allegheny Valley Trail, which will connect 18 municipalities.
“We’ve established a coalition of boroughs, townships, trail groups and greenway advocates to build a continuous riverfront trail that will expand recreational and economic development opportunities,” said Mr. Onorato, who created the Allegheny Valley Community Trail Initiative last year.
