Tighter rules proposed for Allegheny Passage trail

CUMBERLAND, Md. – As the outdoor recreation season begins, the Allegany County Commissioners are considering new restrictions on the Maryland section of a Pittsburgh-to-Washington hiking and biking trail.
One proposal would prohibit traveling after dark, which has raised objections from people who want to hike or bike to work.
The trail’s development coordinator, Brett Hollern of Somerset, Pa., said Monday that such a rule is already in place on some other sections, including Somerset County and Pennsylvania’s Ohiopyle State Park.
The Great Allegheny Passage is managed by an alliance of seven trail groups, each with its own rules.
The 20-mile Allegany County section runs from the state line to the federally managed C&O Canal towpath in downtown Cumberland.
