Bike Path to the Oval?

Does anybody know if the city has been approached about creating some sort of sane bike access to the Oval?

I'm guessing that most of the racers that ride to there don't have a problem with Washington Blvd, but a friend and I have talked about how nice it would be to just ride down with our kids in a trailer, rather than having our wives pile in a car with the kids to drive about a mile.

Riding home last night along Negley Run, I noticed that there is a reasonable amount of (overgrown) flat space next to the road--I wonder if a trail could be put down there, and then another connecting the Oval with Negley Run via the fire academy and police station.

Just a thought....

I would be all about this. I can't think of a decent way to get there from Regent Square.

Good idea !

RE: Bike Path to the Oval?

Shoot, if i was any more bored i would post the link to the city's plan for bike pathery.
It is on another thread here, kordite linked it for sure.
The man is planning on building a path along the rivers that would be the whole county. They are supposed to reexpose the bridge by the exxon and the zoo to make it hollow underneath again. There is a creek there called hefts (?) run and the trail will run under the bridge and up the zoo hill to the mansion at the corner at negley. that all has nothing to do with the oval.
that dirt trail along the oval is supposed to cross under or over butler st and connect tot he proposed trail at the river. in the other direction it is supposed to somehow connect to the trail heading to frick park.
maybe when your son is your age he will see a proposed finish date.

Yeah, Steevo, Heths Run. HP and Morningside folks have actually been meeting about the upper section of the Run, from the zoo to its terminus in Morningside. I think I could actually see the fruits of labor.

As for the connection to the riverfront trail, uh, yeah, maybe my boys can push me down to the river in my wheelchair.

As for the trail, I've actually considered just parking the trailer at the top of it and hiking down. Of course, with two kids, my bike, their bikes, that will only take like three trips up and down.

Good warm-up, though.

It is pretty ironic they put the oval in one of the worst places they could have to get to by bike.

I guess we should all be thankful they didn't put it on Neville Island.

The website that steevo mentioned is http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/trails/namethetrail.html

Take it with a grain of salt, the page hasn't been updated since 2005.

Lookie here.

This seems to contain the most up-to-date info about the Heth's Run project.

Things I like in the plan: "Invasive Plant Removal", 'Pervious Paved Parking Areas", "Cluster Tree Plantings"

Thing I don't like: That they create a new website while there is an old website languishing, providing outdated information and no good way to find current information. I'm sure it's different zones of responsibility but a webmaster should keep pages up to dat.

I admit, I have pages of my own that are a bit out of date but I'm an amateur doing this with what free time I have. One might think that the City would have someone getting paid to do the website and that his responsibility would include actually maintaining the site.

Given the overall state of the city's website, I'm guessing it's not a priority for them.

And from the "gee, that's interesting" department, HethsRun.com is owned by someone in, ummm, Australia.
