Pittsburgh hills list?
Has anyone ever composed a list of the "Hills of Pittsburgh"? Mainly the steep ones (Other than the dirty dozen hills).

you could just look at our map. we mark all of them with either one or two chevrons. it's not a listing of the grades, but it's a visual marker. we made one mistake and forgot to add chevrons to pj mccardle. next printing.. next printing.

Such a list would be an excellent thing to add to the Oscar Swan's guide
wiki, if the wiki achieves existence.

i think between the people hear we could make a pretty comprehensive one... the dirty dozen has already done all the hard work... with bike pgh map pulling up the rear (although, if my memory serves me correctly on hills on green routes are listed or something like that... like i don't think negley is listed)

I had a bookmark to a list like this, but it isn't working anymore. I think it was on the ACA website.

Good point. We only list hills that are on the preferred routes.

That site for Oscar's book really needs fixed up. Many of the links are incorrect or dead.

Yes, the map does show some hills but I've noticed there are many steep one's that are not highlighted. I know you can't highlight them all, especially in areas like beechview and south side slopes.

i took a look at the map and as far as listing hills is concerned it's pretty weak, the main reason being the less steep more bike friendly routes are the ones that are highlighted, and all the hills are not on those roads... which is great for those of us not wishing to punish ourselves... unfortunately that isn't everyone.
that said I can set up a database real quick if people think they want to do this, it would be a simple form input with a simple text display output... input boxes could be length, difficulty, street name, safety... anything else?

Mark that would be awesome!
The list can go:
*Street name and location
*Difficulty rating of 1 to 3?
(3 being maybe over 25%)
(2 being 15% to 25%)
(1 being under 15%)
*Length
*Safety (shoulder, no shoulder, blind corners, etc.)
Any more suggestions?

Stanton Ave. comming out of Lawrenceville is a long one. Not super steep, but long.
There are plenty of steep streets on the southside slopes.

Plum/Hunter Road, off Allegheny River Blvd, next to the Dailey's plant. Long-ish, probably mostly 1, with a section or two of 2. Classic, with lots of corners, and pretty safe since it's wide and there's not a lot of traffic.
Guys Run, coming off Freeport Road. 1 to 2 on the difficulty scale. Another classic. It might be closed at the moment, though.
Spring Garden out of the North Side, to Troy Hill. Long, mostly 1, with a bit of kicker at the end.
Pittsburgh's L'Alpe D'Heuz. The mapped version isn't quite what's in Oscar's book, as we didn't climb a super-steep approach. Still, the climb in the cemetery is swell.
Starz Road, off Saxonburg Road. Classic. Mostly a long 1 through farm country. Low traffic.
Logan's Ferry (and its neighbor, Coxcomb Hill). Logan's Ferry is swell, low traffic, 1 with a stretch or two of 2. Coxcomb is steeper.

I don't know how well this will work but i've done location by asking for the intersection at the bottom of the hill

this will evolve into something that you can export and sort by distance and hardness and safety and stuff.... as soon as I learn how to do that

Cool, I may have to add some. There is just so many to choose from. I think beechview and the south side slopes are the two neighborhoods with consistently steep hills.
